The plan: drop the Boxster 8:30 PM Sun Aug 16 → Uber straight to SAN Terminal 2 (~8 mi, ~15 min, $20–30) → overnight in the terminal → 6:15 AM flight. Saves the ~$150–250 hotel.
✅ This works. SAN's terminals stay open 24 hours landside and staff tolerate overnight sleepers in the pre-security area.
🚨 You cannot sleep at the gate. SAN has no departures overnight, so the gate area closes around 2:00 AM and everyone is pushed back out to the pre-security side. Do not clear security when you arrive — you'd just get walked back out. Stay landside all night; checkpoints reopen ~4:15 AM.

🍽️ Eat dinner BEFORE you drop the car. Landside food at SAN mostly shuts by 9–10 PM, and everything good is behind security, which you're not going through. Have your last real meal in Pacific Beach.
🛑 Where you can't sleep: baggage-claim carousels, escalators, and in front of airline check-in counters are off-limits. There are no dedicated rest zones and it's noisy and bright all night. Best options: the benches in baggage claim and the Terminal 2 prayer room, which is the quietest spot in the building.
🎒 Pack for it: hoodie or layers (terminal AC runs cold all night), eye mask, earplugs or noise-cancelling buds, and your Anker power bank charged — outlets landside are limited and contested. Loop a bag strap around your arm or leg while you sleep; never leave luggage unattended or it gets treated as a security incident.
🏢 Go to Terminal 2, not Terminal 1. Delta operates from T2 East. T1 is mid-revamp with active construction — nothing you want at 11 PM. Tell the Uber driver "Terminal 2 departures."
😴 Honest note: this is ~7 hours on a hard bench, then a full travel day (SAN → DTW → OMA, home 5:13 PM), then your 7 AM shift Tuesday. You'll be running on almost no sleep for about 36 hours. If that gets ugly, an airport-area hotel with a free 24-hr shuttle is the fallback — but the plan itself is sound.
