Palm Desert / Palm Springs / Joshua Tree ground-level hiking is genuinely dangerous midday — heat exhaustion is the most common trail rescue in the Coachella Valley. Rule: hike before 8 AM or not at all, carry a gallon of water per person, and treat noon–5 PM as indoor time.
⭐ The Aerial Tram is the answer for mountains and trails. It lifts you from 2,643 ft to 8,516 ft in 10 minutes, where it's 30–40°F cooler — so ~75°F pine forest while the valley bakes at 110°F. Over 50 miles of trails up top:

Indian Canyons 8 AM–5 PM (last vehicle 4 PM); Tahquitz 7:30 AM–5 PM (last hiker on trail 3:30 PM).
🌵 Joshua Tree: worth it, but only at the edges of the day. Trails can exceed 120°F in the shade and there's no water and no shade in the park. Do sunrise hikes under 1.5 mi and be back at the car by 9 AM, or go late for Keys View and the Cholla Cactus Garden at golden hour (4–7 PM) — that's the postcard light anyway.
🔥 LA closure: Eaton Canyon, Echo Mountain and the Sam Merrill Trail are closed — the whole San Gabriel front range above Altadena/Pasadena, from Eaton Fire damage, expected to stay shut through at least 2027. Don't plan around them. Griffith Park, Malibu, and Topanga are all open and unaffected.

🍽️ Eat dinner BEFORE you drop the car. Landside food at SAN mostly shuts by 9–10 PM, and everything good is behind security, which you're not going through. Have your last real meal in Pacific Beach.
🛑 Where you can't sleep: baggage-claim carousels, escalators, and in front of airline check-in counters are off-limits. There are no dedicated rest zones and it's noisy and bright all night. Best options: the benches in baggage claim and the Terminal 2 prayer room, which is the quietest spot in the building.

Stopping there costs you almost zero extra miles because it's en route. This is your outlet/clothing day, and it's basically free.

🥟 Din Tai Fung — Downtown Disney, 1547 Disneyland Dr, open until 11 PM Friday. No park ticket needed for Downtown Disney. It's the closer of the two OC locations (South Coast Plaza is ~18 mi vs ~9 mi). Walk-ins get long waits — join the virtual queue on the DTF app before you leave the salon.
🛒 Detour worth considering: Asian Garden Mall / Little Saigon (9200 Bolsa Ave, Westminster) is ~13 mi south — the largest Vietnamese-owned shopping center in the US, and your one real chance to stock up on Asian groceries, since the Coachella Valley has nothing comparable. Adds ~25 mi round trip. ⚠️ The Little Saigon Night Market ran Jun 19–Aug 9, so it's finished before your visit.
🚗 Budget 2.5–3 hrs westbound, not the 1:46 that maps will quote — Friday afternoon into Orange County is one of the worst traffic windows in SoCal. And the drive back after dinner is ~1 hr 45 in the dark.
